In the 2008 event, 370 young physicists gathered from 82 countries to compete in solving problems of both theoretical and experimental nature. It is the third time a Japanese team, this year comprising 5 high school students chosen last spring, entered the contest.

The first IPhO took place in Warsaw , Poland , in 1967. From all over the world, youth yet to enter higher education participate with the objective of furthering interest and knowledge in physics and through international exchange to strengthen physics education in the participant countries.

Japan sent 5 high school students chosen in the 1 st National Physics Contest of Physics Challenge 2005 to the 37 th IPhO held in Singapore in 2006, resulting in 1 silver medal, 3 bronze medals and 1 prize. In the IPhO 2007 held in Iran , the Japan team also left a good record, winning 2 golds, 2 silvers and 1 bronze.
