Founded as the Tokyo Mathematics Society in 1877, one of the oldest societies for natural sciences in Japan

The Physical Society of Japan (JPS) has around 18,000 members; research scientists, teachers and engineers.

 Social Action

The JPS, in collaboration with the Physics Education Society of Japan and the National Museum of Science, conducts educational events such as Joyful Physics Experiment Lab, for elementary school pupil and junior high school students, and the Junior Session, for junior high school, senior high school and technical high school students.
Junior session
In the Junior Session, the JPS ask the participants to submit reports on their day-to-day research activities and outputs to a panel of judges. Of the submission, outstanding work will be given an opportunity to be presented at the annual meeting that takes place in the spring. Presentation at the annual meeting of JPS provides an ideal occasion for young, budding talent and established researchers to meet each other and stimulate mutually. There are two sessions, oral and poster, in the Junior session and the left photo shows a scene in poster session in March 2012.
In the Junior session of this year, 10 oral and 24 poster presentations were accepted and reviewed.

International Physics Olympiad (IPhO)
The contribution of the JPS members towards Japanese participation in the International Physics Olympiad (IPhO) is also considerable. The 5 member Japanese physics team was selected in the first Physics Challenge, the national physics contest, and was sent to the 37 th IPhO held in Singapore .
It was the first time a Japanese team entered the IPhO, and their achievement was 1 silver medal, 3 bronze medals and 1 prize. The performances of Team Japan for these 6 years are shown in the table.

the Japanese IPhO participants, is run with assistance from academic associations and cooperation organizations, and JPS members play an important role here as well.

Other Activities
Two other JPS undertakings targeted at non-specialists of physics, namely Science Seminar and Public Lectures which introduce the latest development in the field to students and citizens, gather every year enthusiastic audience. The JPS, as explained above, plans and conducts a wide range of educational and public interest activities related to physics.
